I started my people management journey over 30 years ago and still recall a couple of things that were told to me in my early days that you should always treat people the way you want to be treated yourself and to always remember what the first syllable in management is. Now, I have to admit I had to not only think about what the syllable was, but also just what on earth this wise and learned person was trying to teach me. The answer, of course, is it’s really all about people.
Over the years I have developed training programmes to enable businesses to get the best out of their employees and have advised businesses on how to keep on the right side of the law. In business I always strive to have high standards, if I say I am going to do something, I want to get it done because that is what I would expect from businesses and people providing a service to me.
I started my own HR consultancy 25 years ago and I’m still learning all the time. I’m a Chartered Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). My desire to keep on learning meant I went back to University to qualify at post-graduate level in employment law. I’m a keen advocate of ensuring that people and businesses fulfil their potential.
When I’m not working, I enjoy photography and I’m a fan of Wigan Athletic. I would also like to say that I’m a keen player of acoustic guitar; I would like to say it, but it isn’t true – I have one but I have found saying that leaving it in its stand isn’t the same as actually playing it.
